What is Squeeze Casting? How NDC Industrial’s Semi-Solid Metal Technology is Redefining Aluminium Manufacturing

In the world of precision aluminium manufacturing, not all processes are created equal. While traditional casting and forging each have their strengths, a newer and more advanced technology is rapidly becoming the method of choice for global automotive and aerospace manufacturers — Squeeze Casting using Semi-Solid Metal (SSM).

At NDC Industrial, Squeeze Casting is not just one of our capabilities — it is one of the core technologies that defines who we are. Here is what it is, why it matters, and why it is changing the way the world thinks about aluminium forming.

What is Squeeze Casting?

Squeeze Casting is a precision forming process that combines the best characteristics of both casting and forging. Rather than simply pouring molten aluminium into a mold, the process applies controlled pressure during solidification — resulting in a denser, stronger, and more dimensionally accurate component than conventional casting can achieve.

When combined with Semi-Solid Metal (SSM) technology, the process goes even further. By preparing aluminium in a semi-solid “slurry” state before forming, SSM Squeeze Casting achieves exceptional material consistency, minimal porosity, and superior mechanical properties — all in a single, highly controlled operation.

Why It Matters for Automotive and Aerospace Applications

For industries where component failure is not an option — such as automotive braking systems, suspension components, and aerospace structural parts — the advantages of Squeeze Casting are significant:

  • Near-net-shape output means less post-processing, less material waste, and tighter dimensional tolerances straight from the mold
  • High tensile strength and fatigue resistance make components suitable for safety-critical applications that traditional casting simply cannot meet
  • Full weldability with no blistering or gas outgassing opens up applications where conventional die casting falls short
  • Lower tooling costs compared to traditional forging make it a more accessible solution for medium to high volume production runs

NDC Industrial’s Squeeze Casting Capability

At our Rayong facility, we operate multiple Squeeze Casting lines — including the SQ 400T and SQ 630T machines — capable of producing up to 1,130 and 880 components per day respectively. With a minimum order quantity of 2,500 pcs and cycle times as low as 70 seconds per piece, our lines are optimized for both efficiency and quality at scale.

Every component produced goes through our rigorous multi-stage Process Quality Control (PQC) system — covering material composition checks, semi-solid metal temperature monitoring, casting integrity inspection, and final dimensional and hardness verification before delivery.
